While in Olympia talking about the significance of the Olympia Food Coop’s decision to join the international boycott of Israeli goods in light of the country’s continued attack on the Palestinian People, Ali Abunimah spoke to B Media about the importance of independent media.

Detroit Incinerator Action

On June 27th, community members, activists and environmentalists joined together to march against Covanta and the City of Detroit’s continued use of a toxic trash incinerator in residential areas. Highlights of the day included great street theater, a marching band, sun flowers and tree planting at Go Lightly Elementary school just blocks from the plant.

Paramilitaries kill human rights activists in Oaxaca

Jyri Antero Jaakkola (February 11, 1977 – April 27, 2010 Oaxaca, Mexico) was a Finnish human-rights activist. He was on his way to San Juan Copala, a village of Trique indigenous people that has declared itself autonomous, as a human-rights observer when he was shot dead by UBISORT, a paramilitary organization connected to Institutional Revolutionary Party. In the attack died also Alberta Cariño, an activist for the local organization CACTUS, and more than ten people were wounded.
